Obituary for Satenia “Tina” Zimmermann

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our Mom.
Satenia, gained her angel wings peacefully on Tuesday May 9th, 2023 with her family by her side in her 54th year.
Satenia Zimmermann was the first generation Canadian of German descent. She was a PhD candidate in the faculty of Natural Resources Management at Lakehead University and holds a M.A. in Sociology, a HBA in Sociology and a HBA in Women's Studies, from Lakehead University. She had been a life-long advocate for the rights and empowerment of Indigenous peoples, women and children. Having grown up alongside the Six Nations Reserve in southern Ontario, she saw firsthand the inequalities and racism Indigenous peoples encountered in their daily lives. Her belief that education was key to overcoming the many biased non-Indigenous people have been taught has been a determining factor throughout her academic career. Satenia's current research focused on on the impact of sustainable forest management, in particular the role of free prior and informed consent (FPIC) as outline in the United Nations Declaration on the rights of Indigenous peoples, on the variability of First Nation communities in northern Ontario. Examining the experiences of First Nation communities with both federal and provincial governments, industry representatives and environmental non-government organizations. Her areas of interest included Aboriginal rights, Aboriginal Law, and natural resource development in northern Canada.
Satenia worked hard and in 2022 had completed a chapter in a published book through the University Of Alberta offering insights into how rural communities are created, maintained and challenged 'The Right to be Rural ' chapter 12, Defining Indigenous Citizenship which she was so proud about.
