Obituary for Peter MacDonald (MacDonald)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Peter MacDonald in his family home on August 5, 2021, in his 95th year. Peter was the beloved husband of Colleen MacDonald (née Moore) for over 50 years. He was a loving father to Michael (Liz Jensen), Nancy (Steve Wilson) and Joann (Luciano DeFelice). He was the proud grandfather of Evan and Lily Colleen and step-grandfather to Roy, Natalie, Devin and Hunter. Peter was the cherished older brother of Catherine, Mary Elizabeth Daly and Irene and will be fondly remembered by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Earl (Beverly) Moore, Paul (Laurette) Moore and Jeanette Moore. He also leaves behind many dear nieces and nephews. Peter is predeceased by his parents John Roderick (Big Rory) and Eliza (née MacEachern) MacDonald, his siblings Donald (Frances), Virginia (John) Graham and brother-in-law Stephen Moore. A special thank you to Dr. William Sulis, Dr. Natalie Desrochers, Peter’s personal support workers and supportive neighbours for their care and compassion. His children would also like to thank Mom for her loving, generous care over many years.

Born in Little Judique Ponds, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Peter helped his father to install the first electrical wiring in the homes in their community. Peter believed in the value of education, and he attended night school to become a certified electrician and to study many other subjects that interested him. He worked at various places over his career, including Canron and the Hamilton Psychiatric Hospital. In his spare time he enjoyed fixing cars and small engines, drawing, camping, adopting stray animals, socializing with friends and doing crossword puzzles. For many years after retirement he enjoyed travelling around North America, visiting places such as Florida, Mexico and Arizona with Colleen in their RV.

Peter was a gifted athlete, baseball player and avid sports fan. He carried that passion with him to Hamilton, Ontario, where he cheered on the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Blue Jays. For many years he coached youth hockey. We will miss his sense of humour, his compassion and the deep care he showed for others.

In keeping with Peter’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Peter’s family will be receiving friends for visitation on Thursday, August 12th, 2021 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Dunnville, On. from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., with a funeral mass to follow, celebrated by Father Sunny Sebastian and Archbishop James MacDonald (Peter’s cousin). In lieu of flowers, donations to Haldimand-Norfolk Community Senior Support Services, Dunnville Office (or charity of your choice) in memory of Peter would be appreciated by the family.
