Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lillian and yet still rejoice that she has entered into Glory and the arms of Jesus. Her Heavenly welcome would have been quite a celebration as she was greeted by her son John Acland, husbands Gordon Acland and Fred Lederman, her parents Harry and Mildred Lucken, brothers Fred, Ted Lucken and sister Helen Young as well as all those who have been awaiting her arrival and a grand reunion.
Lillian passed away peacefully in her home at Extendicare with her devoted and caring daughters by her side on February 5th, 2021, in her 96th year. Respected, fiercely loved and cherished mother to Linda and Harold Smith, John, who has met her in Heaven, and Peggy Acland along with Donna and George Sheldrake. She is the adored and admired sweet little Gramma to Tracey and Jim Bagley, Lori and Allen Reynolds, Scott and T Smith, Julie and Sean Galvin, Mark and Steph Acland, Greg and Monica Sheldrake and Corey and Lana Acland. Lillian was thrilled to become a Great Grandmother to David and Emily Bagley, Jamie Lynn Bagley, Alyssa and Jessica Reynolds, Tosh Withington, Dakota and Emily Smith, Josh and Sam, Macie and Cali Sheldrake, Madeline, Lillian and Makynlee Acland. The legacy of love continued as Lillian became a Great Great Grandmother or “Triple G”, as she was affectionately called, to Kate, Adam and Caelan Bagley and Booker Withington. Lillian always had more than enough love in her heart for her growing family. She gave her time and love generously to those around her. Between her children and all of her grandchildren Lillian’s social calendar was always a busy one. Ordinary days and everyday life punctuated by birthday parties, family trips, Christmases, holidays north and holidays south, graduations, showers, weddings and babies kept Lillian at the centre of the family and the centre of our hearts. She truly shone in the presence of family and remains a lovely treasure to each of us. All of these events will never be the same, but we are the close knit family we are because of Lillian. We will continue to celebrate the milestones with elderberry pies, butter tarts, date cookies and all the jams and dill pickles she spoiled us with over the years. We will think of her and smile. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by nieces, nephews and all of those she was blessed to call friends.
Pastor Miles Lohnes and South Cayuga Baptist was not only Lillian's church, but also her community and her extended family. Coming “home” on Sundays was always a bright spot in her week. Dressing in her Sunday finest, the country drive with her children and often great grandkids, time spent in worship, the time of fellowship with friends followed by family meals at the farm or back in the city brought her great joy. She was made to feel like a celebrity with the attention and love she received from her church community. While heaven has become her new home, Lillian has been laid to rest in this place she so loved. “The master said, ‘Well done, my good and faithful servant. You have been faithful in handling this small amount. So now I give you many more responsibilities. Let’s celebrate together!’ " Matthew 25:23
Lillian’s family offers Extendicare staff, nurses, personal support workers and the recreation team heartfelt gratitude for their love and kindness with a special thank you to Dr. Tuttle. We are grateful for the care and compassion always given to our Mum.

When I think of Lillian I smile, she was a great lady. She always greeted me with genuine kindness. In reading Lillian’s memoirs the mention of dill pickles gave me a jolt. I have her recipe written in her hand. The BEST dill pickles, when I make them all of my family can’t wait for their jar. They turn out so well because I follow Lillian’s guidance to a T. A true treasure to have!
