Passed away peacefully on Monday October 14th, 2019 at the Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, Dunnville, in his 57th year. James leaves behind his mother Jean (Cripps) Stengel and his late father Earl Stengel (2017), his sister Kathryn Stengel and niece Selina Stengel, Aunt Joyce Jantzi (Robert). James was a graduate of Western University, as a well respected and loved lawyer in the practice of Houghton, Sloniowski and Stengel, Welland for the past 28 years. James was an experienced litigator practising in a wide variety of areas of family law, covering a wide range of legal and social issues; including 10 years on the panel with the Office of the Children's Lawyer. In addition, he had exposure to a range of child protection issues requiring sensitivity to the varied needs of disadvantaged children and families in distress. James was a member of Law Society of Upper Canada, Ontario Bar Association, Founding member, Niagara Collaborative Family Law Association, Founding member and secretary, Family Law Bench and Bar Committee, Legal Advisory Committee Member, Pathstone Mental Health Services, Representative, Welland County Law Association, Member, Association of Family and Conciliatory Courts, Member, Child Protection Advisory Committee and Board of Directors of Hope Centre, Welland. In 2017, James had the honour and once in a lifetime experience of attending the Supreme Court of Canada, of which he played an instrumental role. James was a Family Law Facilitator and Instructor with the Ontario Municipal Association. James was a guest lecturer, York University, University of Western Ontario Law School and Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology. James was an avid reader, had a love of history, the theatre and movie nights with friends. He had a passion for family tree, which sent him to see the Isle of Islay, Scotland, and travelled there several times where some of his ashes will rest. His home, away from home was his cottage (bolt hole) at Kincardine where he loved to garden, cook and entertain family and friends. James was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, Dunnville. Family will receive friends at the Ballard Minor Funeral Home, 315 Broad Street East, Dunnville on Friday October 18th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Saturday October 19th at 11am at Knox Presbyterian Church, 223 Lock Street West, Dunnville.
