Obituary for Herman "Herm" DeRuiter

DeRuiter, Herman “Herm”
It is with great sorrow that our family announces the passing of Herm on Wednesday, November 27, 2019, in his 68th year. He is survived by his beloved wife Brenda and his devoted sons Derek and Nick. Herm was incredibly proud of these fine men he raised. He will be incredibly missed by his siblings, Irene and Jim Baarda, Dini and Bert Van Beek, Al and Sharon DeRuiter, Henny and Lawrence Uyl, Hank and Janice DeRuiter, and Hilly and Paul Gaskin. Predeceased by his parents Dick and Hilda DeRuiter and his oldest brother John and his wife Linda. Brenda’s parents, Stan and Sharon Meadows, loved Herm very much. He will also be missed by Brenda’s sister Marlene and Brenda’s brother, Jason and his wife Elva. Herm will be remembered and missed by many nieces and nephews, his faithful dog Chief, neighbours, and countless friends. Herm lived out his Christian faith every day in his generosity, kindness, selflessness, endless patience, and his warm and loving smile. Herm has been a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Dunnville since his family immigrated to Canada in 1959, where he had served as a deacon and elder. Since his retirement he has been volunteering for Senior Support Services. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Youth Impact Centre and enjoyed volunteering there with kids on Tuesday afternoons. One of Herm’s greatest passions was playing soccer with his treasured friends on the Dunnville United Soccer Club. In honour of his many years with the team and dedication to them they honoured him by retiring his jersey #3. Herm loved golfing with Derek and Nick. He enjoyed cooking, puttering in the garden, cheering on the Toronto Maple Leafs, and the annual D.U.S.C. hockey pool, especially his recent wins! Herm’s greatest love was his wife Brenda. From their first date, they knew they would be together forever. They shared the same faith, values, goals, interests and always enjoyed being together whether it was just being at home with Chief, Saturday morning yard sales, cooking or working in the gardens were all so special because they were with each other. They were devoted to each other and loved each other unconditionally through the good and the bad times. They were married 24 years and were excited to celebrate their 25th Wedding Anniversary next May 27th. Visitations for Herm will be at BALLARD MINOR FUNERAL HOME, 315 Broad Street East, Dunnville, on Sunday December 1st from 2 – 5 pm and 6 - 8pm.
