Obituary for George Anderson Cowell

George Anderson Cowell,
Passed away peacefully at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, Dunnville, in his 95th year after a battle with cancer.
George is predeceased by his loving wife and best friend of 63 years, Beverley Jeanne (Stowe), sisters Hill King (late Gordon), Bett Phillips (late George) and Peg Cowell. Dear brother-in-law of Jim (Emily) Stowe and late Bill Stowe (Sandy and late Jack Murphy). He will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and great-nieces-and-nephews as well as many neighbours and friends who also considered him a surrogate uncle.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at both the Juravinski and H.W.M.H. hospitals for the care given to George.

George was born on the dining room table of the family century home and remained connected to Dunnville soil from that day onward. Upon the early death of his father, he left school at 14 and took over the family farm which he managed until 2007. Many younger friends and relatives were shown the value of hard work while helping George with the chores. Despite the challenges of farm work, George always maintained his sense of humour. Bev used to tell the story of ploughing the fields with two tractors and George would cheekily wave at her every single time they passed each other, for hours on end.

George and Bev enjoyed many years of summers camping at the Rave-Away along the river and their winters snowmobiling between trips to Florida. He was particularly proud of his time volunteering with the local firefighters, eventually earning the title of “Senator.” Friends and family were incredibly important to both of them and they were constantly surrounded by those that they loved. Always a story-teller, George could keep a room entertained with anecdotes of his constant adventures and never missed an opportunity to tease or play a prank on the unsuspecting.

Friends and family will be received for visitation at BALLARD MINOR FUNERAL HOME, 315 Broad St. East, Dunnville, On., Dunnville from 11:00am to 12:30pm on Tuesday, November 2nd. Interment will follow at 1:00pm at Riverside Cemetery, Dunnville, where, in classic George Cowell style, he has requested to arrive in the back of his red Ford F-150 with 6 of his nieces as pallbearers. Donations in memory of George may be made to Juravinski Cancer Centre, South Cayuga United Church and/or No 6. RCAF Dunnville Museum. A live-stream of the Graveside service will be viewable on The Funeral Home Website and Facebook Page for those who wish to support the family in this way. Livestream will start 5 minutes prior to service. Friends are invited to send condolences and sign the Book of Memories at www.ballardminorfh.ca
